As people get dementia their brain can revert back to previous reference frames aka when she was young and may have thought such things. Dementia has a tendency to turn people into the opposite disposition of who they once were.

I seem to recall your making a few "controversial" comments in the past yourself. (How about years ago when you made light of gay-bashers from the stage after someone was bashed at Wigstock?) I say give the old lady another chance. The old lady herself claims she never said it anyway:

some irresponsible fag "journalist" in Ohio quotes Carol saying something completely out of character and completely contrary to her actions, and he can't produce a tape to prove she said it, she denies it, and yet this shit is going to stick for the rest of her life and beyond. Gays got lazy, lazy minds.
I thought that whole "no tape" thing was fishy, too. ANYTIME a journalist does an interview, they usually always tape it, if for no other reason than to protect themselves legally. The fact that he didn't have a tape always made this whole thing suspect...and it's completely out of character for CC, although it's possible, as one commenter said, that it could be due to dementia...frankly, I'd rather give her the benefit of the doubt.
Why does everyone confuse a persons stage persona with who they actually are?...Personally I love Carol as a performer...I dont know her as an individual,so I would never try to comment on her as a person..I love the performer,still do..even though she hates us all...Do you all really think bunny is this fat mumu wearing cocksucking pig?? ok,bad example...but my point is,Carols persona is a very carefully planned one..The public is seeing what she wants us to see..It's very possible the old nut said it....
As a gay man, I find it interesting how we'll bash anyone who says anything bad about us. And yet, Bunny is here doing it again to poor Carol. Bunny might want to re-roll the tape from when Kevin Aviance was on stage a wigstock several years ago proclaiming how limited straight people are and that gay people were going to rule the world. And we wonder why the cycle continues?!?

I worship Carol Channing. Lighten up! This is a cartoon which I didn't even create! Am I bashing her by posting a silly cartoon? Are you muslims, for chrissakes? I still love Carol and would see her perform in a heartbeat. I still play Donna Summer's music every Sunday.

I agree with sisterboy's comment that you can love someone's stage persona and not like their offstage persona. Phyllis Diller is a republican!
Not all interviewers use tapes. Many, especially at the level of local gay mags, just type in their answers as they go. This is the main type of publication which interviews me, so I oughta know.
Is there evidence to suggest that the journalist who conducted this interview is irresponsible? Or are you calling him an 'irresponsible fag 'journalist' in Ohio because you don't like what he may (and I believe did) have unearthed from Carol's mind?
Carol may well have dementia. She's always been a kook, which is why I love her. But I did sit behind her at a Sandra Bernhard concert and watch her put on not 1, not 2, 3, or 4 but 5 types of lipstick, one right after the other. I thought it was fascinating, but also insane.
I saw her at the Gay Community Center making a hilarious speech on her life. Elaine Stritch had a hit on Broadway with her one woman show at that time, but Carol said during her speech that she could NEVER have a one-woman show like Elaine's. The audience, who had been rolling with laughter throughout her speech, cried "No!" in unison. After the show, I approached her and said, "I've seen Elaine's show and while it's great, this casual interview with you was just as entertaining if not more. I'm sure you could do a fab one woman show. Breaking her nutty character for a second, her face went form wacky to stern as she told me "I said no." I was crushed. I had only wanted to compliment her.
The next time I saw her was in NYC at her one woman show--the one she'd snapped at me she could never do. I complimented her glittery Mackie and her reply made no sense whatsoever. I actually videotaped her signing books and she seemed quite confused. If not completely senile. So maybe she does have dementia. Since it's one of the symptons of AIDS, I'm sure that fags can forgive that.
As far as my contoversial comments at Wigstock regaring gay-bashers, I hope I've made more controversial ones that those, over 10 years ago. But jut for the record: I had no proof that the gay-bashing had even happened or that it wasn't provoked. Busy with the festival, I didn't see it. And my only reporting source was Michael Signorile with extremely dilated pupils screeching at me that I had to start a riot--over a bashing I didn't see. I didn't want to turn Wigstock into a riot. In fact, gays were so political back then that I thought an apolitical drag festival was refreshing. (How things have changed.) I still think I made the right choice. Without any proof of the bashing aside from someone shrieking "Riot!" while seemingly tripping their brains out on ecstacy, what else is an essentially comic figure going to do if not make light of that and on with the show? I'm making light of Kevin Aviance's bashing in the HX which will hit the stands this Friday. Kevin loved the other jokes I've made it about it on my blog. I can be a little dark.
But I get your point. Perhaps people will taunt me with whatever crack--I don't remember--I made about the bashers until the day I die and it will possibly poison me in some people's minds. But is a split-second decision made by a festival organizer/emcee with an 8-hour festival to helm comparable to a relaxed interview like Carol's with this Ohio journalist?
My real problem is with religion, not Carol. But if Carol is "knee-deep in the bible" (as I think she put it in this interview) and therefore no longer fond of her gay fans because she now views them as sinful, it just gives me another reason to despise brainwashing organized religion and the fact that many of it's followers frown on gays. No matter how much the gays may love them. --LB

I see what Bunny's saying, too, but I think there's usually a kernel of truth in most great performers' stage personas. Phyllis Diller may be a Republican, but Republicans haven't always been the assholes they are now (Democrats aren't so hot these days, either, actually--neither party cares about the people). The reason I love a performer is because I feel that I CAN identify with him/her...as if they're speaking for me (and right or wrong, folks, we ALL love some performers for that reason, no matter how much we honk the "look how much they've given the world, so they can say whatever they want now" horn). If I find out later that their offstage personality is unattractive or they've been laughing at me behind my back, why shouldn't I feel betrayed? If you dislike a certain segment of the population, then don't GO to gay community centers, don't GO to AIDS benefits...you know, the knee-deep Bible also says not to "bear false witness," and isn't that what they're doing if they really hate us and do these things anyway?
Stars EXPECT us to identify with them, at least on a certain level--otherwise, we wouldn't spend money on what they're peddling.
Maybe some people can just enjoy the performances anyway...I guess I just can't.

If a gay icon were laughing at gays behind our backs I might feel betrayed, but it's their right to laugh. What I hate is gays being condemned by a gay icon--if it even happened with Carol in this interview--with their only weapon being a dusty book of contradictory fairy tales like the bible.
